According to the Mirror, Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor has revealed that he is interested in buying Everton if he can successfully sell his stake in the Eagles. The American businessman says he plans to bring in top international players to Goodison Park.
Textor has made his intentions clear to gain control of Everton. The American businessman pointed out that if the deal goes through, young Brazilian talent from Botafogo might follow him to Everton.
However, Textor’s Eagle Football Group must first deal with its 45% stake in Crystal Palace. Last weekend, Textor watched another of his clubs, Lyon, play in the Emirates Cup in London. In addition to owning Botafogo and Belgian club Molenbeek, Eagle is also seeking to acquire a Portuguese club.
When asked about his interest in Everton, the American owner said: “I’m still a Crystal Palace man, I have to exit Crystal Palace before I can consider other acquisitions. We have shown our interest in taking a majority stake in an English club, whether it is the Championship or the Premier League. Yes, we are definitely looking at Everton, and other clubs too. But I need to sort out Crystal Palace first, before anything else can move forward. I’m fascinated by English football. When you see these historic clubs, some in the Premier League, some in the Championship, these names I grew up with, it’s magnetic. It’s a draw for me personally, but also fits our group’s business model. When I’m interested in those traditional clubs, athletes around the world are interested in them too. We’re signing Brazilian players aggressively now because they want to play in Europe. Having a core, genuine English club is essential to our group’s club matrix.”
“I use the word ‘matrix’ instead of ‘multi-club system’ because we expect every club to be a champion. The traditional youth system might not always work, but players from South America, Central America and North America all dream of coming here, so having a good Premier League club as part of our group is important. We will continue to look until we find the right partner.”
Textor invested £86 million in August 2021, acquiring 40% of the club, later increasing his stake to 45%, but he said he has failed to gain a controlling interest. Steve Parish, Josh Harris and David Blitzer are the other co-owners of Crystal Palace.
“The good news for the fans is that none of the owners want to leave – we all love the club,” Textor said. “Everyone enjoys it here, it’s a great investment – we all love this club dearly.”
In addition, Textor confirmed that his group is also considering investing in Queens Park Rangers.
