Slot gives his first interview with the club’s official website after taking over from Klopp as Liverpool manager.
Do you find it easy to relax on holiday?
“No! I think a coach, me or anyone else, doesn’t really relax. Of course the last few weeks have been nice, because I could look back on the good time I had at Feyenoord and look forward to joining a club like Liverpool. So, some summers are not that nice, because that’s also the life of a former footballer and coach, but this summer has been really nice, because I left Feyenoord in a good way, and I’m coming to a club where Klopp left a good mark. So, yes, the summer has been nice.”
Was it important for you to talk to Klopp?
“Yes. Someone who has been at the club for nine years and has been so successful, you definitely want to learn from him about everything about the club, you also want to learn about the players. He gave me a lot of good advice, but I think what impressed me was how happy he was for me, I think he also said it in the media, that from now on he will be my biggest fan, because he supports Liverpool in the best way, which doesn’t happen often.”
Do you share any similarities with Klopp’s style?
“I think there are, I think that’s also one of the reasons why I’m here. I think at Liverpool they weren’t looking for a completely different type of coach, but they were looking for a coach who could continue the successful tactical system they have. That might be one of the reasons why they came to me.”
The new Premier League season is only eight weeks away, what are your priorities in the next eight weeks?
“In pre-season, it’s all about getting the players used to it, getting your ideas, your patterns of play, into the players’ heads. As you already mentioned, the style of play won’t be completely different. But if we do exactly the same thing, it would be strange, because while I’m Klopp’s successor, I’m not entirely like him.”
