ESPN: Deal imminent for Ashworth to become Man United’s new sporting director

ESPN: Deal imminent for Ashworth to become Man United’s new sporting director Manchester United are on the verge of a deal with Newcastle United to appoint Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director. Sources told ESPN that Ashworth has been on leave since February when he informed Newcastle of his desire to move to Old Trafford. Newcastle had insisted on a compensation fee of around £20 million, and the two clubs are said to be close to an agreement.

Ashworth’s appointment is another major appointment following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as co-owner. Omar Berrada will begin his role as chief executive on July 13, ending his leave from Manchester City. Additionally, Jason Wilcox has joined as technical director from Southampton.

In Ashworth’s absence, Manchester United’s summer transfer plans were overseen by Wilcox, chief scout Steve Brown and head of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves.
