Football Insider has claimed that Everton are set to sign England U20 international Tim Iroegbunam for a fee of around £10 million.
A source told the publication that Everton’s bid for the 20-year-old has been accepted, and personal terms have now been agreed with the player. The player is said to be ready to join the Toffees and will move to Goodison Park for a fee of £10 million.
The move is reportedly being driven by Everton manager Sean Dyche’s desire to add depth to his midfield for next season.
Iroegbunam, who will turn 21 on June 30, is a Nigerian-born midfielder who was born in Birmingham. He joined Aston Villa from West Bromwich Albion in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee.
He has represented England at various youth levels, including playing for the U19s at the 2022 European U19 Championship, helping the team to win the tournament. He has also made seven appearances for the U20s, scoring two goals. Iroegbunam has attracted interest from other clubs, including Dutch giants Ajax, but it seems Everton are likely to win the race for his signature.
Everton are in a financial crisis and were deducted points for breaching Premier League financial fair play rules in the 2023-24 season. The Toffees may have to sell players to stay afloat this summer. Reports suggest that Everton’s signing of Iroegbunam may be a move to prepare for a sale in the holding midfield position, with Belgian international Amadou Onana a potential departure.
Aston Villa are also facing financial problems. Football Insider previously reported that they need to raise £60 million through player sales this summer, otherwise they could face sanctions for breaching financial fair play rules.
