Schmeichel Rejects Saudi Offer! He Hopes to Return to the Premier League and is Over 700 Games Played

On July 2, Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers expressed strong interest in Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. As of July 1, Schmeichel is a free agent after his contract with Anderlecht expired.

Wolves are considering their goalkeeper options, but have yet to make any substantial signings. Rumors suggest that Schmeichel is keen to return to the Premier League after a season each in France with Nice and Belgium with Anderlecht.

The experienced goalkeeper expressed his desire to return to the Premier League, which he considers his “second home”, after Denmark’s 1-1 draw with England in their European Championship group stage match.

Schmeichel, 37, further enhanced his value with his impressive performance for Denmark. Although Denmark was eliminated by hosts Germany in the round of 16 of the European Championship, his performances were still noteworthy.

Schmeichel recently revealed that he turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia as he yearns to return to Leicester City, where he became a legend. At Leicester City, he helped the club win the 2016 Premier League title and made 479 appearances.

During the January transfer window this year, Schmeichel was a target for Nottingham Forest, but due to various reasons, he was unable to leave Anderlecht.

Belgian media reported that Schmeichel’s contract with Anderlecht included an option for a one-year extension.

It is understood that Anderlecht wanted to activate this clause, but Schmeichel declined and informed the club he would make a decision after the European Championship.

Anderlecht failed to qualify for the 2024-25 Champions League, missing out on qualification in the final round of last season.

Therefore, if Schmeichel chooses to stay, Anderlecht will struggle to meet his salary demands. Meanwhile, Anderlecht’s appeal to Schmeichel has also diminished due to their failure to enter the top European club competitions.

As the son of Danish and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, Kasper Schmeichel has made over 700 appearances for clubs in his career and 105 for the Danish national team.
