Former Everton CEO: I don’t think O’Neal will buy West Ham shares

According to media outlet “Football Insider,” former Everton executive Keith Wyness has suggested that NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal is unlikely to buy shares in West Ham United and become a minority owner of the Hammers.

On June 26, British media outlet “The Sun” reported that O’Neal, a former NBA Hall of Famer, was in talks to purchase a stake in West Ham United. Although O’Neal is unlikely to become a major shareholder of the Hammers, the news has caused quite a stir. In recent years, many American celebrities have tried to invest in British football, such as NBA star LeBron James, NFL legend Tom Brady, and famous actor Ryan Reynolds, all of whom have had similar deals in recent years.

Now, the 66-year-old former Everton CEO believes the deal is unlikely to happen. Wyness, born in 1957, has served as CEO of Aston Villa and Aberdeen, and was Everton’s CEO at the turn of the century. Wyness has now established a football consultancy firm that provides services to clubs. In the “Football Insider” podcast, he said that O’Neal’s interest in West Ham United could be to “make headlines” and bring “freshness”. However, O’Neal’s interest in West Ham United “doesn’t feel right”.

O’Neal is 52 years old this year. During his basketball career, he played for the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics. He has won four NBA championships and three NBA Finals MVPs, and has been selected to the NBA All-Star Team 15 times. After retiring in 2011, O’Neal has continued to lead a colorful life. He has invested widely in a variety of industries, including catering, fitness, auto repair, and according to American media (The Washington Post), he also owns a small portion of Google’s original stock.
