July 2nd, according to the Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United scout, Jim Butt, wanted to sign Matthijs de Ligt seven years ago but believed the club didn’t take it seriously.
Butt, now 61, joined Manchester United in 2014 alongside Louis Van Gaal. He left the club in 2022, after eight years at Old Trafford, to join Newcastle.
According to Butt, “It was frustrating how long it took the club to make decisions on players we were interested in.”
“Now, other European giants have the top players and our scouts have been spotting them for years. Like De Ligt. We wanted him at 17, the same with De Jong.”
“We were ready to agree deals and allow players to stay and develop in Holland, but the lack of urgency from the club meant it didn’t happen.”
