According to the South Korean website Naver, Son Heung-min’s baseball game with South Korean national goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu at a local stadium near their homes drew a massive crowd of fans, creating a significant safety hazard and forcing police intervention.
On the evening of July 5th, local time, Son Heung-min and South Korean national team goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu visited a sports park in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, for a baseball game. Son Heung-min’s arrival quickly became a hot topic on local social media, with over 2,000 fans rushing to the park, causing chaos.
Within a short period, police received over a dozen calls reporting “a large crowd gathering, very dangerous.” South Korean media reported that during the game, many fans tried to climb over the stadium fences to see Son Heung-min, while others attempted to rush onto the field, posing a safety threat. There were even reports of fans arguing and engaging in physical altercations.
Police were forced to report the situation to the security department. Authorities mobilized 29 security personnel and police officers to control the situation. Seeing the chaos, Son Heung-min ended the game 10 minutes early. Afterward, police officials stated, “Fortunately, there were no major incidents, and all the fans returned home safely.”
On July 6th, Son Heung-min apologized for the incident during an event organized by a sports goods company in Seoul: “I need to train to stay in shape so that I can be in better physical condition when I go to the club and prepare for the new season, so I’m going to keep doing that. Yesterday, I went to train, and there was an opponent available for a game, so I did. I’m deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused to everyone. Now that it’s the off-season, I have a lot of time to spend with my family, I’ll go out with friends, get some rest, but I’ll also work out occasionally.” This isn’t the first time Son Heung-min’s baseball game has drawn a large crowd of fans. Last month, on the 27th, Son Heung-min played an informal game in Seoul, which also attracted a large number of fans.
Son Heung-min’s team, Tottenham Hotspur, is set to begin its pre-season training camp in a few days. Tottenham will play a game against the K League All-Star team on July 31st in Seoul, and on August 3rd, they will face Bayern Munich, the team of Kim Min-jae.
