Former French International: I Don’t Believe in Multi-Club Ownership, Chelsea Will Die Because of It

In an interview with Get French Football News, former French international Frank Leboeuf expressed his views on multi-club ownership and the current state of football.

Leboeuf said: “Multi-club ownership? I think it raises a huge ethical issue. When you see that the owners of Manchester City and Girona are the same person, if they meet in the Champions League, they can’t play each other, Girona would be excluded from the Champions League, that’s not normal, that’s something I can’t understand. But that’s the new system, it’s a financial issue. I think it’s good that Chelsea is closely linked to Strasbourg to help them solve their financial problems.”

“Strasbourg is called ‘Little Marseille,’ the club belongs to the locals, it’s their club, just as it’s impossible for Newcastle to do as Chelsea wants. You can invest money, no problem, but if you don’t understand the area, you don’t know how things work there, you can’t make decisions. So, you need to be very careful because fans are suspicious, they are currently disappointed because they don’t see anything happening. In the end you will feel that Chelsea is shifting their problems onto Strasbourg.”

“I think this will drag Chelsea down and could also lead to a slow death for Strasbourg. The Chelsea owner investing in Strasbourg at the same time will bring money to the club, but if both teams need to avoid relegation at some point, there could be big problems.”

“We have issues about Ligue 1 and TV rights that haven’t been resolved, we’re trying to increase the price of broadcasting rights, but Ligue 1 is not attractive. On the other hand, we also have problems with the tax liability of clubs, we are not competitive compared to La Liga, Bundesliga and Premier League, the best players in the league will choose to leave. When I moved to Chelsea, my income doubled. However, for Chelsea, they paid me the same salary as Strasbourg. But from a tax perspective, it doesn’t work.”
