The Mail on Sunday can exclusively reveal that hygiene standards at Manchester United’s canteen are a cause for concern, with mould found in the dishwasher, grease dripping from the walls, and rotting metal racks in the storage room.
Last December, guests visiting the club for an event suffered from food poisoning after eating at the canteen. Following complaints from attendees, food was tested, and a batch of undercooked chicken legs was deemed the likely culprit. While Manchester United took remedial action, inspectors were still unable to award the club a five-star hygiene rating, instead giving it four stars.
Inspectors unearthed further concerns during a subsequent inspection. Mould growth and debris were found in the dishwasher, while gas pipes were in a “greasy condition”. Elsewhere, extractor canopy filters were coated in dust, and an emergency button inside a walk-in fridge was “very dirty”.
In the dry store area of the Red Cafe, grease was found to be “dripping from the walls”, and Manchester United were ordered to undertake a deep clean to eliminate any fire risk. At the same location, a gas pipe leading to a grill was not correctly connected to fixed pipework, while several gas appliances were not fitted with safety chains. Additionally, metal racks in the storage room were found to be rotting.
While Manchester United achieved an ‘A’ for their compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures, they only managed a ‘C’ for compliance with structural requirements and a ‘C’ for confidence in management and control procedures.
A spokesperson for Manchester United said: “As the report acknowledges, the club undertook significant improvement works between November and February, raising our rating to 4 stars. This is an ongoing process, and we are confident of regaining our 5-star rating at the earliest opportunity.”
