Bonucci on Calafiori: “It would be great if he joined Juve, he would be a pillar of the Italian defense”

On July 22, Italian football legend Leonardo Bonucci expressed regret and disappointment over the impending transfer of Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal, stating that he would have preferred to see him join Juventus. Bonucci also praised Calafiori, predicting that he would become a mainstay of the Italian national team’s defense for years to come.

In the 2023-24 season, Calafiori played 33 games for Bologna, scoring 2 goals and providing 5 assists, helping the team finish 5th in Serie A and qualify for the Champions League. In the 2024 European Championship, Calafiori also performed well but missed the Round of 16 match against Switzerland due to accumulated yellow cards. Italy ultimately lost 0-2 to their opponents and were eliminated in the round of 16.

It is understood that Calafiori is close to joining Arsenal. Bonucci expressed his disappointment: “I really hoped to see him join Juventus. He’s a defender with a strong personality and is very team-oriented. Serie A is losing a great player to another league. He will be a pillar of the Italian national team’s defense for the next 15 years.”
