Conte: Napoli still adapting to high-intensity pressing philosophy, my team never parks the bus

Thanks to goals from Lindstrom, Spinazzola, and Cheddira, Napoli secured their second consecutive victory in their pre-season friendlies against Serie B side Mantova. Conte experimented with a 3421 formation once again, with Cheddira playing in a false 9 role. Notably, Osimhen was absent from the entire game, not even making the bench. After the match, Conte said in an interview: “The experiment worked well in this game. After nine days of preparation, we delivered in terms of fitness and tactics, for example, high pressing and the forward positioning of the backline. However, we still need to do better in controlling the game.”

Conte believes that continued victories will create more space for adjustments. Napoli needs a complete transformation. Conte said: “The momentum of winning helps us continue to win games. I reiterate that we must do better in possession, but I am very happy with the team’s aggression and high positioning. We need to continue working and improving, so the return of players who participated in international competitions will undoubtedly contribute to further improvement. We started slowly and then gradually adapted to the rhythm. In the days to come, the lads will understand more and more, the important thing is to bring tremendous intensity to the game. I don’t want a team that just knows how to defend and waits for death.”

Napoli will face Egnazia on July 28th, Brest on July 31st, and Girona on August 3rd. After completing their pre-season schedule, their first official match will be the Italian Cup qualifier against Modena on August 10th.
