AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, who is currently training with the team in the United States, has pointed out that Americans are not as football-crazy as Europeans during an interview with CBS Mornings. He also said that his decade-long journey in Europe, which was filled with challenges, was “unbelievable.”
“It’s a different world for Americans to understand the passion of the AC Milan fans. You don’t really see that kind of passion in America right now,” Pulisic said. “It’s unbelievable to play for such an iconic club like AC Milan. As soon as I came to Italy, I felt the passion immediately. Even just walking around the city, you can feel it, you can see it. It’s definitely different than what it is right now in America. That’s what makes it so special being a part of a historical club.”
Pulisic, who previously played for Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea before joining AC Milan, reflected on his time in Europe, saying, “I’ve been in Europe for 10 years now, which sounds crazy, right? It was really tough at the beginning. People would look at me and think, ‘This is an American, I don’t want him taking European’s jobs.’ You really have to have a strong mentality and not care what people think. I just go out there and show people what I can do. Hopefully, they’ll accept me, they’ll know who I am, they’ll know what I’ve done.”
He added, “It was a big cultural shock coming from the Premier League to Italy. I remember when I first got here, I didn’t know one word of Italian. I went into training, and the coach was yelling at me… Ibrahimovic helped translate? Yes, but a lot of it was body language. In this sport, you don’t have to say that much. You use your body to explain!”
Pulisic joined AC Milan in the summer of 2023 from Chelsea for a fee of €20 million. He has made 50 appearances across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing 11 assists. In his recent press conference, new Rossoneri coach Paulo Fonseca said that Pulisic is “the perfect number 10” and will be considered a key player for the team this season.
