Marotta Appointed as Inter Milan President with No Raise, Given Autonomy on Transfers Under €20 Million

Italian media outlet Calcio Finanza has reported that former Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta will not receive a salary increase after being appointed as the club’s president. However, he has been granted the authority, alongside the club’s CEO of Finance, to approve transfers under €20 million without needing approval from the board.

At the end of May, Zhang Kangyang lost control of Inter Milan after failing to repay loans secured against the club’s ownership. Oaktree Capital, a California-based investment firm, became the club’s majority shareholder. On June 4, a significant board meeting took place, resulting in documents that will have a profound impact on the club’s operational model. Italian media outlets, having obtained these documents, have revealed some of the inner workings.

A key change in roles involved former CEO of Sport Beppe Marotta taking on the role of Inter Milan president, replacing Zhang Kangyang. However, he also continues to serve as the club’s CEO of Sport. The reason for this is that, from Thohir to Zhang Kangyang, the Inter Milan presidency has always been an unpaid position. However, Marotta, having a family to support, could not work for free. Therefore, he takes on both roles, with his salary remaining the same as during his time as CEO (his contract was extended until 2027, with an annual salary of €1.5-1.8 million, subject to performance bonuses). His appointment as president is primarily an “honorary position”.

Furthermore, the relevant clauses grant Marotta greater autonomy. He can collaborate with the club’s CEO of Finance (Antonello) to decide on transfers under €20 million and contract negotiations under €10 million (for both players and coaches) without needing further authorization from the board. Inter Milan’s transfer manager, Piero Ausilio, will also be granted the authority to make decisions on transfers under €10 million and contract negotiations under €5 million.

Italian media outlets highlight that Inter Milan has consistently provided Marotta, Ausilio, and others with greater autonomy over the years. During the Zhang Kangyang era, the club’s “empowering management” approach primarily involved the owner actively supporting the management team. Now, this trust is explicitly codified in written provisions.
