On August 18th, Empoli drew 0-0 with Monza in the first round of Serie A. The match was overshadowed by criticisms from the footballing world regarding the terrible pitch condition at Empoli’s home stadium.
The broadcast footage revealed a truly awful pitch at Carlo Castellani Stadium. The entire field was uneven, with large patches of bare soil, not only detracting from the match’s quality but also posing a risk of player injury.
Following widespread criticism of the pitch’s state, Empoli have officially issued an apology. They stated that they had planned to renovate the pitch during the summer but had to delay due to an Italy national team friendly scheduled for June 9th. Another event, initially scheduled for the stadium, was ultimately moved to another location.
The club’s official statement reads: “Due to these reasons, we were only able to start repairing the pitch in July, leading to the current situation seen in the Coppa Italia and yesterday’s Serie A match.”
“We once again apologize, and we are confident that for the next home game against Juventus, the pitch will be restored to perfect condition, as it has been in the past years.”
