August 19, 35-year-old goalkeeper Sommer announced his retirement from the Swiss national team through his personal social media today.
Sommer, now 35, has made 94 appearances for the national team since his debut in May 2012, kept 35 clean sheets, and participated in 5 major international tournaments. He has now brought his international career to an end.
The Swiss national team also issued a statement thanking the veteran player: 12 years of excellence, reliability and always a great atmosphere.
