Capello: Inter still the biggest favorites to win the title, Juve’s focus on Champions League qualification is not enough

On August 17, Gazzetta dello Sport interviewed Capello to preview the upcoming Serie A season. In Capello’s opinion, defending champions Inter Milan will still be the biggest favorites to win the title.

Capello first talked about the defending champions Inter: “Inter are not weak on paper, maybe they lack a center-back to replace Acerbi, he has a very good tactical mind and can command the team’s defense well. Inter are the best-equipped team in Serie A and also have excellent attacking players like Lautaro, Barella and Calhanoglu.”

Capello then talked about the teams that could threaten the Nerazzurri: “AC Milan will be the most important rival to Inter’s title defense, but their problem lies in the weak midfield defense. When Milan makes mistakes in midfield defense, they are often broken through and scored by the opponent, which was exposed again in the Berlusconi Cup game against Monza. Juventus have lost some important players and also excluded Chiesa from the team. Juventus appointed new coach Motta, we need to see if he can bring changes to the team, whether the new signings deserve the black and white jersey. If Juventus only aim to qualify for the Champions League, that’s not enough, the team must fight for the championship.”

Capello also talked about last season’s Europa League champions Atalanta: “Unfortunately, two important players, Scalvini and Scamacca, will be absent for a long time due to injuries, while Koopmeiners is likely to leave. But Atalanta still has a tough fighting spirit, as shown in the Super Cup game against Real Madrid. If Koopmeiners joins Juventus, he will surely enhance the Bianconeri’s fighting strength.”
