On August 7, Andre Onana said in an interview that Manchester United fans should be prepared for him to take on more risk and responsibility next season.
Onana has occasionally been caught out trying to play out from the back but the goalkeeper has warned fans he will be even more adventurous when the new season starts, telling them to be prepared for high-risk, high-reward football.
Onana said: “This is what you’re going to see this season, because I’m going to take a lot of risks. The best teams in the world, they take risks starting from the back, knowing the situation, when they are one on one or when they press with three or four, we dominate the situation.”
“For me, it’s important to recognise these things and to make the best decisions for the team. I’m going to take a lot of responsibility and I think I have the strength to take it, don’t you? I think this season will be great.”
“You have to balance this, criticism is sometimes good, because you have to look back at what you did wrong, so for me, I take it positively.”
As part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff overhaul this summer, Manchester United appointed goalkeeper coach Richard Van der Weide, who joined the club from Ajax to replace Richard Hartis, helping the side to play out from the back, a crucial part of ten Hag’s playing philosophy.
According to the schedule, Manchester United will face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 10th at 23:00.
