UEFA: Teams to Be Drawn Manually, Matchups and Home/Away Decided by Software for Group Stage

The draw for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League group stage is just around the corner. Given that this is the first season under the “Swiss-system” format, UEFA has released a special article explaining the draw process, which is dramatically different from the traditional “group stage draw”.

UEFA: Teams to Be Drawn Manually, Matchups and Home/Away Decided by Software for Group Stage

If the traditional draw method were applied to the current format, it would require nearly 1000 draw balls and as many as 36 draw bowls. The entire process would be lengthy and cumbersome for everyone involved. Therefore, this draw will be done through a combination of manual selection and computer software.

Guest draw participants will draw specific teams from physical draw balls, after which computer software will assign each team their 8 opponents for the group stage, as well as determine home and away matchups.

According to the draw ceremony’s schedule, the 9 teams in Pot 1 will be drawn first, followed by Pots 2, 3, and 4 in succession.

To ensure the schedule doesn’t conflict with UEFA Europa League or Conference League matches, and to prevent multiple matches taking place in the same city at the same time, the specific Champions League match dates and kick-off times will be announced on August 31.
