On June 2, The Sun reported that over 50 troublemakers were arrested during the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
During the game, fans stormed Wembley Stadium and clashed with police. Footage showed a large group of people jumping over barriers and pushing through ticket booths at the iconic London stadium. Despite a £5 million steel cordon being put in place to prevent a repeat of the 2020 Euro Championship chaos, mayhem still occurred outside the stadium. Over 2,000 police were deployed but were unable to control the chaos. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that 53 arrests were made at Wembley Stadium. Five of those arrests were reportedly for pitch invasion, with the majority of the rest being made for attempts to disrupt security.
Just 30 seconds into the Champions League final, the game was suspended due to three pitch invaders. One of the invaders stopped to take a selfie with Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. The three troublemakers evaded Wembley Stadium’s £5 million security enhancements to storm the pitch, each wearing T-shirts bearing the name “Mellstroy”. Two of the invaders were quickly removed by Wembley Stadium security, but then another one ran onto the pitch. Some players were visibly annoyed, and eventually four security guards subdued the final trespasser.
It is worth noting that Mellstroy is a controversial blogger who reportedly offered £300,000 to anyone who ran onto the pitch at the Champions League final wearing a T-shirt with his name on it.
