Former Scotland star Ally McCoist has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo would be unlikely to be playing for England at the age of 39.
After observing Ronaldo’s performances in the first two matches of the European Championship, McCoist believes Ronaldo would find it tough to be part of the England squad.
McCoist commented: “To be honest, Ronaldo would have a real struggle to be in the England team now. Maybe five or ten years ago, he would walk into the team, but time has caught up with him, as it does with everyone. So, I don’t think Ronaldo would be in the England starting line-up.”
As one of the oldest players in the tournament, Ronaldo has broken the record for most European Championship appearances with this being his sixth.
He is also in pursuit of another record: the oldest player to score in a European Championship, and is also pushing for the overall record of European Championship goals. He has scored 14 goals in the five previous tournaments.
In this tournament, Ronaldo has continued to be favoured by Portugal manager Roberto Martínez, in contrast to the previous manager, Fernando Santos, who favoured Ronaldo less in the 2022 World Cup.
Ronaldo has started both of Portugal’s key group F matches against Czech Republic and Turkey, and assisted Bruno Fernandes in the match against Turkey.
