June 24 – According to DO, chief reporter for The Athletic, England manager Gareth Southgate has decided to start Gallagher in place of Arnold for the final group stage match against Slovenia.
England currently sits top of Group C with four points after one win and one draw in their first two games. Southgate’s aim is to win the last group stage match to secure top spot in the group and avoid landing in the same half of the draw as Germany and Spain.
Arnold’s regular position at Liverpool is right-back, but he has started both of England’s first two matches in midfield alongside Rice. He has been underwhelming in both matches and was substituted for Gallagher, who went on to lead England for chances created and key passes in the remaining time.
Southgate has made changes to his starting lineup in his third match of each of the last three major tournaments and has also made changes to his starting lineup for the first knockout round each time.
