Fabregas: It’s time to end England’s debate about player positions, I won the Euros playing up front

There has been much debate surrounding Southgate’s team selection lately. Today, former Spain legend Cesc Fabregas gave his opinion in an interview, stating that these doubts are insignificant as he won a major tournament playing in a position he wasn’t accustomed to.

The recent controversy revolves around the deployment of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who usually plays as a defender for Liverpool, in midfield for England. Similarly, Phil Foden, who plays on the right wing for his club, has been utilised on the left for the national team. Many believe that these key players being out of their comfort zones is contributing to England’s recent struggles.

Fabregas said, “This is a very interesting debate, but you know Spain won the Euros in 2012 when I was playing up front, Iniesta was on the left wing, and David Silva was on the right wing. All three of us were playing in ‘wrong’ positions. We were all midfielders. But for me, the position doesn’t matter. You need to have the ability to read the game and express yourself on the pitch to have an impact.”
