Italy’s Sports Minister: Lack of Self-Criticism After Euro Exit

Recently, Italy’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, spoke to the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport about the Italian national team’s exit from the European Championship in the round of 16.

Abodi said: “After our elimination in the round of 16 of the European Championship, we have lacked self-criticism and accountability. The Italian Football Federation hasn’t had any discussion, starting from President Gravina’s report. Having an early election as a first step feels like an instinctive reaction rather than the result of a shared reflection. Of course, this acceleration has made the ‘Mulè Amendment’ even more useful and necessary in its final version. For the first draft, I was negative and I also told UEFA President Ceferin. In Germany, we had an honest and constructive dialogue, contrary to some inaccurate descriptions. In any case, I now hope that this law, which will be approved in the next few hours, will be immediately implemented by the will of the Italian Football Federation and its components.”

Abodi also commented on the appointment of Luciano Spalletti as head coach and the overall management of the national team: “I hope to be able to restore a dedicated body within the Italian Football Federation for training and selecting national team coaches and technical staff. This needs a rethink of the entire structure of Italian clubs and their technical sectors. I’ve always had a positive opinion of Spalletti, but an analysis and self-criticism are needed, which is missing. What happened cannot be simply explained away with ‘it happened’ or ‘the opponent was stronger.’ We showed our worst side. I hope they will learn from this defeat, but so far I haven’t seen any signs of it.”
