According to British media outlet The Mirror, the FA board has officially approved the hiring of a foreign coach, boosting the chances of Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino taking charge of the England team. Additionally, the England team will be led by an interim manager for the Nations League fixtures in September.
British media reports suggest that all nine members of the FA board unanimously agreed that FA CEO Mark Bullingham can approach foreign coaches. This means that the possibility of Tuchel and Pochettino, previously considered frontrunners for the job, has significantly increased.
However, the biggest obstacle to hiring a foreign coach is salary, as Tuchel and Pochettino’s salary demands are far beyond the FA’s financial capabilities. Despite this, Mark Bullingham and FA technical director John McDermott have jointly compiled a shortlist of potential candidates. They will then meet with each candidate individually before submitting the final selection to the FA board for approval.
Due to the time required for interviews and approval, the two England matches in the Nations League in September are expected to be led by an interim manager. According to the schedule, England will face Ireland away on September 7th and Finland at home on September 11th.
Besides the increased possibility of Tuchel and Pochettino taking over as England manager, Jurgen Klopp, who was previously included in the shortlist, has personally confirmed that he is not interested in the England job. “There are no plans to return to coaching at the moment. We’ll see how things are in a few months,” he said.
