England legend John Barnes has spoken about Phil Foden’s form at the national team, revealing why he feels the young star can’t replicate his club form on the international stage.
Barnes himself experienced a similar situation during his playing days, excelling at Liverpool but struggling to match that level for England. He said, “It felt like I was out of my body. I went through something similar, Sir Bobby Robson told me, ‘I want you to play for England like you play for Liverpool.’ I said, ‘If England play like Liverpool, I can!’”
“The same with Foden. Whether you put him left, centre, right, unless England play like Manchester City, nothing will change. Man City have Gvardiol at left back, he’s not a left-footed player, so it suits Foden’s game. But it’s different for England, they can’t set up like Man City. Bellingham is the focal point now for England, now Foden has to be a sub, pass the ball to him and do his defensive work.”
