In the early hours of June 27, Georgia defeated Portugal 2-0 in their final group stage match of the European Championship, qualifying for the knockout stages in their debut tournament.
After the match, Georgia’s football hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave an interview, in which he opened the scoring for his team in the 2nd minute of the match.
Kvaratskhelia said: “There are no individual stars here, we are a unit, and we showed the world what we are capable of. The victory is the result of the team’s efforts, we have always been focused and eager to win. Today’s joy is indescribable. Of course, from tomorrow we will be preparing for the next battle, and we are grateful for all the support we have received.”
Speaking of Portugal’s legendary star Cristiano Ronaldo, Kvaratskhelia shared a heartwarming moment and expressed his respect: “I got Ronaldo’s shirt, and we also qualified for the next round. For Georgia fans, this is one of the best days of their lives. We made history, no one believed we could do it. No one believed we could beat Portugal, but this just shows the strength of our team, we proved that we could do it, even if there was only a 1% chance.”
“Ronaldo came up to me before the game and wished me good luck, I couldn’t believe it. He is a great player, but also a great man, and that’s why he is so respected both on and off the field. I have the utmost respect for him, he is one of the best players in the world. When he takes the time to talk to you, it is an inspiration, it helps us believe that we can do something today. We are incredibly proud because we beat a truly excellent team.”
