Stones: I understand the fans’ frustration but we’ve made big strides

England drew 0-0 with Slovenia in their final Group C game at the European Championships, but still topped the group. After the game, England center-back John Stones spoke to the media.

Stones said: “I can understand the fans’ frustration, but that’s football, it’s never an easy game.”

“I believe we can beat the teams ahead of us. We need to step up in key moments, and we’ll work on that in training. Our goal was to top the group and we did that, but it’s not always a smooth road.”

“I think we’ve made big strides from the previous two games, we found players in attacking positions and created more chances, we’re moving in the right direction.

On Gareth Southgate’s substitutions, Stones added: “They came in and did their jobs 100% today, they deserve credit for that. They didn’t get as much game time as they’d like, it’s tough, but the mood around us has always been good. We focus on ourselves and things we can control.”

England have only won two of their last eight games since their 2-0 win over Malta in the Euro qualifiers in November.
