According to Bild, Christoph Kramer, player for Borussia Mönchengladbach and commentator for German television channel ZDF, has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with England manager Gareth Southgate’s coaching tactics.
Following England’s goalless draw with Slovenia in the final group stage match of the Euro Cup, Kramer directly criticised Southgate’s coaching performance. He stated: “What puzzles me is that when you compare Southgate with Tuchel, Tuchel always has a clear tactical blueprint in mind. Once his plan is disrupted, he actively adjusts on the sidelines, as you can see from his facial expressions and body language. Southgate seems to have no formed tactical plan at all. He just sits there quietly and lets the game unfold on its own.”
Kramer further elaborated: “Generally, as a coach, you should have a clear tactical intention and show urgency when it’s not working, trying to communicate new instructions to your players. But Southgate seems indifferent, just letting this theoretically talented team play freely. After watching England’s first half, our common feeling was: there was no structure on the field!”
England won their first group match against Serbia by a narrow 1-0 margin, but drew 1-1 with Denmark in the second game, which led to dissatisfaction and boos from the England fans.
Kramer was puzzled by Southgate’s failure to adjust his tactics after the first match. “If the ability to improvise is lacking, at least make some adjustments for the next game, but he almost kept the same starting eleven. It seems to depend entirely on the individual performances of the players, and we could almost sense the players’ helplessness. They were sent out on the pitch, even with a top-class squad, but with this tactical arrangement, they struggled to achieve anything.”
Kramer also mentioned: “Slovenia were not performing brilliantly either, but against England, they seemed to be able to hold out indefinitely. England, despite giving their all, almost lost to an equally out-of-form opponent.”
Kramer concluded by saying: “England’s overall performance is indeed unsatisfactory, as we have noticed earlier. The team seems to be left to its own devices, lacking effective guidance and constraint, which is regrettable.”
When presenter Catherine Müller-Hohenstatt mentioned Harry Kane’s interview and asked if he thought England could turn things around in the knockout stages, Kramer resolutely responded: “Impossible!”
He stated: “No matter who they face in the knockout stages, they are destined to be eliminated.”
