England forward Anthony Gordon spoke to the media after England’s European Championship group game against Slovenia, discussing his own performance and the team’s struggles.
Gordon only came on as a substitute in the 89th minute of the game, and those few minutes are the only minutes he’s played so far in the tournament.
In his post-match interview, Gordon was candid about his disappointment: “It’s frustrating, because I want to play.”
“I think every player wants to play, and it’s tough because there’s so many great players here. But in any game, it’s tough to watch from the sidelines and you just want to be involved because you know you can make a difference.”
“I think I did that in this game, I came on with a purpose, I wanted to be direct and try and cause problems in the last few minutes, I’m always going to play that way.”
Gordon also stated that he believes England aren’t yet playing to their full potential: “I think we can do a lot better than we are at the moment, we’ve been training great, but it’s just not clicking in the games. Hopefully we can show that in the next few games. We need to become a more attacking team, dictate the game.”
“I don’t think it’s nerves, the players here have played on big stages, so I don’t know the answer. I think we’re keeping possession well, but what we’re missing is that directness. Like in the last few minutes, we created some really good chances, that’s when you have to go for it, not worry about conceding.”
