According to Le Parisien on June 27, Paris Saint-Germain has informed Slovak defender Milan Škriniar that he is not part of coach Luis Enrique’s future plans. The decision stems from Škriniar’s underwhelming performance in his first season with the club.
PSG signed Škriniar on a free transfer, hoping he would become a pillar of the team’s rebuild, especially after Sergio Ramos’ departure. However, his performance didn’t convince the club, so PSG plans to sell him in the summer transfer window.
Škriniar’s high annual salary – €9 million – has become a major obstacle for a transfer. He has no desire to leave the club, despite being sidelined by Enrique at the end of the season, and enjoys life in Paris. Even when Lucas Hernandez got injured, he didn’t get a chance to play.
During the winter transfer window, the arrival of Lucas Bernat strengthened the defense, and Enrique preferred to use defenders who could dribble forward, giving Bernat more playing time and pushing Škriniar to the fringes. Škriniar got injured during the UEFA Nations League in January, impacting his performance at the end of the season. Even after he fully recovered, Enrique still opted for other players, especially in the latter stages of the season.
While PSG is keen on selling Škriniar and will consider any reasonable offer, no club has expressed interest in signing him yet, mainly due to his salary demands, which are unaffordable for most European clubs. Škriniar is comfortable living in France and has no intention of leaving the club, despite being excluded from Enrique’s plans. Last season, the former Inter Milan player made 34 appearances, accumulating 2429 minutes of playing time.
PSG had hoped that Škriniar would perform well in international competitions, thereby increasing his market value and allowing them to fetch a higher transfer fee in subsequent transfers. PSG will resume training on July 15th, and, as last year, Enrique is expected to release a list of “excess” players who will be relegated to fringe training until they find new clubs. Whether Škriniar will be on this list remains to be seen, but the answer is likely affirmative.
