Belgium drew 0-0 with Ukraine in their final Group E match of the European Championship, securing second place in the group and a spot in the knockout stages. After the game, Belgian coach Domenico Tedesco spoke to the media.
Following the goalless draw, Belgium players were met with boos from their own fans. Veteran Jan Vertonghen responded with a gesture, while captain Kevin De Bruyne led his teammates directly to the dressing room without acknowledging the fans.
Tedesco said: “Booed by our own fans? I was surprised. The most important thing was to qualify. We lost the first game, so our chances of progressing weren’t looking good. After we beat Romania, everyone was happy. My players don’t understand why we are being booed now. Ukraine are a tough opponent, we gave everything to score. But hey, we have to accept it.”
Player Yannick Carrasco also expressed his confusion about the jeering: “As a team, we are very proud to have qualified. We don’t understand the reaction of the fans, and we are disappointed. We didn’t go to thank the fans, we decided to go back to the dressing room together because we think that was an unnatural reaction.”
