June 26 – Former World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi has announced his retirement from playing and will join the Germany U17 national team coaching staff.
The 32-year-old German defender has been without a club since leaving Spanish second-tier side Levante in the summer of 2023. He also appeared as a commentator on German television during this year’s European Championship.
Mustafi said: “(Retirement) is a shame because I would have loved to play football for longer. I have wanted to gain coaching experience for a long time. I want to pass on all the experience I gained at the U15s, U21s and national team level to the kids.”
Mustafi played for Hamburg, Everton, Sampdoria, Valencia and Arsenal, making 151 appearances for the Gunners after joining in 2016 and winning the FA Cup twice.
He also made 20 appearances for Germany, winning the 2014 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup.
