After a winning start to the Euros, England have been hit by injuries, with left-back Luke Shaw sidelined for the entire opening game and Trippier, who filled in, picking up an injury in the match. England desperately need a reliable left-back.
Ferdinand, in an interview today, offered his opinion: “If Trippier and Luke Shaw are both unavailable for the Denmark game, England might be in trouble. We could try Saka at left-back, if I was in that situation, I would definitely put Saka at left-back.”
“The advantage of this is that as soon as we get the ball, Saka is back to being a left-winger. You’ve seen the problems he causes for full-backs when facing them, and he doesn’t just cut inside. He’s really good on the outside, with his passing and control.”
Saka also spoke about his experience playing left-back at Arsenal: “It’s not my natural position, but Arteta has given me the advice I need, I’ve learnt how to deal with opposing forwards, how to position myself, I’m able to create space. When we have the ball I can join the attack as a winger and when we’re defending I can work on my clearances, my headers and things I haven’t done before. I think I’m doing okay at it.”
