Southgate was thrown a beer cup after the last group match against Slovenia. He revealed before the start of the knockout stage: “This European Championship may be my last chance. Our team has many problems now, different from before, I think this may be because of me. I may be the biggest problem.”

“I must help the players as much as possible, because we have rediscovered the joy of playing for England, and we must be very careful about how we move forward. I understand how people feel about me, but it’s vital that fans support the players.”

Previously, Southgate told German newspaper Bild that he would likely resign if the team doesn’t perform better than the previous European Championship and win a trophy.
