Euro 2024 Preview: A Draw Acceptable for Both, Can Romania and Slovakia Find a Winner?

June 27th 00:00, Group E Round 3 of the European Championship, Slovakia VS Romania.

Currently, all four teams in Group E have 3 points. This is the first time in European Championship history that all four teams have the same points going into the final round. Despite losing 0-2 to Belgium in the last round, Romania is still able to secure the top spot in the group due to a better goal difference. Slovakia, also with 3 points, is currently third in the group, with two more goals scored than the bottom-placed Ukraine.

Since 3 out of the 6 third-placed teams in the group have confirmed that they will have less than 4 points, in fact, Romania, Slovakia, and even Belgium, they can all secure qualification with just a draw. Only bottom-placed Ukraine needs to fight for all three points in the last round.

Related Data

Romania will be hoping to progress from the group stage for the second time in their sixth European Championship, the last time being in 2000, when they were coached by Emerich Jenei. Knowing that a draw against Slovakia will secure them a top-two finish, a draw is certainly within their contemplation. This suggests they are likely to approach the game defensively, having conceded only five goals in ten qualifying matches.

Slovakia will be looking to progress to the knockout stage of a major tournament for the third time in a row, having previously done so at the 2010 World Cup and the 2016 European Championship. Despite losing 2-1 to Ukraine in the last round, Slovakia have not lost consecutive matches since September 2022, which could be a positive sign for them as they are looking to progress with a draw. In fact, the defeat to Ukraine was only their fourth loss in their last 19 games.

Head-to-head record

There isn’t a lot of history between the two teams. This will be the first competitive match between them since the turn of the century, with their previous four meetings being friendlies. Their most recent encounter was in August 2013, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia have failed to beat Romania in eight encounters (4 draws, 4 losses).

Injury news

Slovakia have no injury concerns to deal with, they have fielded the same 11 in both of their opening games so they are expected to continue with the same line-up.

As for Romania, they are also fully fit. Their left midfielder Mihăilă was substituted early in their last match against Belgium, but while he could be in contention for a starting place, he may not be able to play the full game.
