England’s WAGS (wives and girlfriends) have always been a unique sight outside the pitch and in the stands during major tournaments. While some media outlets criticized this as a detrimental influence on the team’s preparation, Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate still insisted on allowing families to join the camp after each group stage match, a move that has been praised by the players.
According to The Mirror, Southgate is relaxed about players’ families visiting the camp, believing that appropriate relaxation is necessary. England’s European Championship camp is located in a luxurious golf resort with state-of-the-art facilities, but it is quite remote. Therefore, Southgate has allowed the WAGS to join the England training base after each group match to reunite with their partners. After the group stage opener against Serbia, all families received invitations to visit, but not everyone entered the camp.
In 2006, also in Germany, England’s WAGS even stole the spotlight. Unlike the boisterous atmosphere of the 2006 World Cup base camp, family visits at this European Championship are carried out in an orderly manner. Striker Watkins expressed his satisfaction with the team’s arrangements: “It’s great to have family watching us play, of course. Our staff has worked really hard to create the conditions for our families to join us in our downtime, and it feels great. For those of us who are away from home for a long time, it’s tough being away from our families and kids, so the team’s arrangement is really great.”
