Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk spoke to the media after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Austria in the final group stage match of Euro 2024. The Dutch went 2-0 down before twice equalising but eventually fell to a disappointing defeat that saw them finish third in Group D.
Van Dijk said: “We played poorly in every aspect. We started very loosely, we were bad in our pressing and in our duels, and it meant we were always on the back foot.
“You have to try to maintain possession for longer periods so you can get more involved in the game. But it starts with the duels, of course, and we didn’t put in enough energy.”
“We all have responsibility. This shouldn’t have happened, but it did, and it’s bad. We have to make changes quickly if we want to achieve anything in this European Championship.”
