According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, after Italy’s last-minute draw with Croatia secured their qualification, some Italian fans were attacked by Croatian extremists in the center of Leipzig, leaving four people injured, with two later being transported to the city hospital.
The Leipzig police issued a statement: “Law enforcement officers successfully arrested 11 suspects (Croatians and Bosnians, aged 21 to 44) and detained them. Subsequently, all were released. However, a case has been opened against them for serious bodily harm.”
Meanwhile, the match between Spain and Albania in the same group also saw a vicious fan clash. Reports say that supporters from both sides got into a brawl in the stands.
After the European Championship draw, everyone labelled Group B the “Group of Death,” as Spain, Italy, and Croatia are all traditional powerhouses. However, after three group stage matches, Italy and Croatia appear to be “fake powerhouses,” with only Spain playing at the expected high level.
