According to the Mirror, Luke Shaw has announced he has recovered and is ready to represent England in the European Championship knockout stages.
The 28-year-old Shaw has set his sights on being available for the last-16 tie in Gelsenkirchen, stating that he will be ready for the “next game.”
England boss Gareth Southgate took a big gamble on Shaw, as the Manchester United left-back hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury on February 18.
Shaw has been one of England’s best and most reliable performers under Southgate, and his return will be a huge boost for the Three Lions in the upcoming games. Southgate’s decision to take Shaw was possible because UEFA allowed national teams to expand their squads to 26 players, giving England the chance to take a gamble on the left-back’s fitness.
Shaw has been training consistently with the team since arriving in Germany, but he has also been on his own individual program and working under the supervision of the medical team.
However, Shaw did train with the rest of the team ahead of England’s final group game against Slovenia and was named as a substitute but ultimately did not feature.
Now, Shaw is hoping to feature for England in the last-16 of the Euros. Shaw’s return will ease the burden on Kieran Trippier. The Newcastle right-back has been deployed at left-back to address England’s defensive injury crisis.
Trippier has done a decent job, but he has admitted that he’s been finding things tough at times due to a lack of game time over the past few months because of a calf issue. The biggest problem is that Trippier is a right-footed player, which means England lacks width on the left side of the pitch.
The draw for the Round of 16 has been made, and England will face Slovakia for a place in the quarter-finals. Both teams are in the bottom half of the bracket.
