Carvajal: I’m the best right-back in the world, coach says controlling possession is the key to winning

Spain secured top spot in Group B with a perfect record, winning all three of their group stage matches against Croatia, Italy and Albania. They will face Georgia in the Round of 16. Carvajal started two of the group stage games and scored against Croatia in the 3-0 win, showcasing his impressive form.

Speaking about how he maintains peak physical condition, Carvajal said: “First, you need to do it. It all comes down to training, rest, and diet. It’s different now that I have children, and being a father changes you.” Carvajal added: “I’ve just had a great season, I’m the best right-back in the world. Yes, that’s what I think, and if I don’t believe it, who will?”

Alongside Carvajal, Nico Williams and Gavi have also been in sensational form during the European Championship group stage. Carvajal commented on their performances: “Spain has a lot of impactful players, like Gavi and Nico Williams. Their play on the flanks makes the game so much easier.” He also revealed that coach Luis de la Fuente had stressed the importance of possession: “The coach told us that if we want to keep winning, we need to control the ball.”

On the departures of Nacho, who has left Real Madrid, and Joselu, who is set to leave the club, Carvajal said: “It’s a real shame to see them leave, but their decisions are the right ones.” Speaking about the future, Carvajal stated: “When I leave Real Madrid, my career will be over because I won’t be playing for any other club.”
