England will face Slovakia in the Round of 16 of the European Championship on July 1st at 0:00. Ahead of the game, centre-back Guehi said that the team still has absolute confidence in head coach Southgate and that England will take every opponent seriously.
England topped Group C with 5 points from their three unbeaten group stage games. They will face Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Southgate and his team have been heavily criticised for their performance in this tournament, but Crystal Palace centre-back Guehi believes Southgate still has the support of the dressing room. Guehi said: “Southgate’s contribution to England is there for all to see, you can see it in his record. Everyone is behind the manager, we are still a tightly knit group, we are focused on the next game. Everyone is grateful for the manager’s work, especially myself, he gave me my debut for England and he has faith in me. So I am very grateful to him and I am sure my teammates feel the same.”
With the group stage complete, England have avoided Spain, Germany, Portugal, France and Belgium in the knockout stages, landing in what seems to be a more favourable half of the draw. Guehi believes that there are no easy games in the knockout stages. Guehi said: “From the way the tournament has gone, I don’t think there’s an easy half of the draw, every opponent is going to be tough. We need to stay calm and focused, keep our momentum going and take each game as it comes.”
