Dutch Media: Netherlands Shouldn’t Underestimate Romania, Their Long-Range Shots and Counterattacks are a Threat

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has pointed out that while the Netherlands is one of the favorites to win the European Championship, they shouldn’t underestimate their Round of 16 opponent, Romania. Though Romania haven’t been a prominent force in recent tournaments, they possess three unique weapons.

The report excerpts: The Eastern European side Romania surprisingly topped Group E. In a group where all four teams finished with 4 points, they outperformed Belgium to finish first. Coach Edi Iordănescu said, “This is one of the best moments in Romanian football history.” Romania’s golden age was in the 80s and 90s, when they were led by Gheorghe Hagi, considered the nation’s greatest player. However, Romania has been absent from the world stage in recent years, last appearing in the World Cup in 1998. Their victory against Ukraine in this tournament was their first European Championship win since the new millennium.

Dutch media have pointed out three aspects that make Romania dangerous. Firstly, their long-range shots. In the match against Ukraine, captain Stanciu and former Ajax player Marin both scored from long range. In practice, Romania has incorporated long-range shots as a primary scoring method, and many of their attacks aim to create space around the edge of the penalty area. The Netherlands must be aware of this.

Secondly, their counter-attacks. Romania doesn’t prioritize possession. Their possession percentage in the 3-0 win against Ukraine was even less than 30% (29%). But with efficient and swift counter-attacks through the midfield, they achieved a complete victory.

Most importantly, their teamwork. This Romanian team lacks star players. The most famous player is defender Radu Drăgușin, who recently joined Tottenham Hotspur for €25 million. However, the team’s strength lies in its collective organization. Every player is willing to sacrifice for the team’s operation and balance.
