A World of Difference! Georgia Players Only Get Rest Days, While Spain’s Starters Haven’t Played in Days

According to Spanish newspaper AS, there is a stark contrast in rest time between Spain and Georgia ahead of the European Championship Round of 16.

On the Spanish side, since the clash against Italy on June 20th, seven key players including goalkeeper Simon, defenders Carvajal and Cucurella, midfielders Rodri, Fabián, Pedri and striker Nico Williams, have not played a single minute, enjoying almost 10 days of rest. Only Ferran Torres has consistently started in the last round, while Le Normand, Yamal and Morata have seen limited playing time.

On the other hand, Georgia fought hard to secure third place in their group after their intense match against Portugal, earning their ticket to the knockout stages. Key players like Kvaratskhelia have accumulated 253 minutes in the tournament, while Mikautadze has clocked in 268 minutes. The entire team has endured a significant physical test in the three consecutive group stage matches.

This massive gap in rest time has sparked discussions. Some worry that Spain’s extended break could backfire, while Georgia, riding high on momentum after defeating a tough opponent, might be able to make up for their physical deficit with their high spirits and unwavering determination.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, is not concerned about the situation. He points out that the team has maintained a high training intensity at their training camp in Donaueschingen. Players who played the last game are in match fitness. This strategy ensures the squad is both rested and match-ready.

De la Fuente has taken rest into account when making team selections. He emphasizes the need to provide adequate rest to players like Rodri and Carvajal, who have played over 5000 minutes this season. He also considers the recovery of Pedri, who is not yet fully recovered, as well as the high-energy players like Cucurella, Fabián and Nico Williams.

Spain has implemented a rotation strategy, while Georgia has largely relied on their starting lineup. The rest advantage could prove decisive in the upcoming clash in Cologne.
