England’s performance at this European Championship has been underwhelming, with many questioning why Southgate hasn’t started Palmer. Speaking to talkSPORT today, England manager Southgate explained why he opted for Saka in the starting lineup while Palmer was relegated to the bench.
Southgate said: “They are slightly different but similar, they both play on the right, both left-footed. Obviously, with Saka, he provides a more direct impact, he’s got pace and more experience in big games. Palmer is still adapting to the Premier League, he’s still adapting to being in an England squad.”
“I’m very pleased with both of them, they’ve both contributed well and hopefully when they come on they can make a difference. In the last few games, rotating them has helped us to perform. Everybody needs to be ready, with the extra subs in extra time, up to six substitutions, everyone’s preparation is really important.”
