In the Round of 16 of the European Championship, Højlund wasted a chance in both halves, ultimately leading to Denmark’s 0-2 loss against Germany and elimination from the tournament. After the match, Danish striker Højlund expressed his guilt for the team’s elimination on Instagram.
Højlund wrote: “To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect from my first European Championship experience. Cheering for Denmark has always been a joy in the heart of every Dane, and to play for Denmark is an indescribable feeling.”
“I was so eager, so wanting to make our nation proud. I texted a friend that I felt a little guilty, which is a strange mix of emotions because there’s also pride in there. Obviously, we wanted to bring the trophy home, but what will always make me proud as a player and a Dane is: we are red, we are white. We stand together, shoulder to shoulder.”
Højlund started all four of Denmark’s matches in this European Championship, but failed to score a single goal. Of course, the entire Danish team only managed two goals in the tournament.
