On July 1st, Spain beat Georgia 4-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the European Championship. Midfielder Fabian Ruiz, who contributed a goal and an assist in the match, said the current Spain team has the potential to write their own history like their predecessors.
Although he hasn’t secured a starting spot and is still competing with teammate Merino for a place alongside Rodri, Ruiz is gradually establishing himself in the national team at this European Championship. After scoring against Croatia in the group stage, Ruiz scored again in the first knockout round, helping Spain reach the last eight.
After the game, in an interview with TVE, Ruiz couldn’t hide his excitement: “I’m very happy that the team has qualified, this victory is very important, we did it. We weren’t calm enough with the ball in the first half, the own goal put us on the back foot, but we turned the tide in the second half, Rodri’s goal gave us the initiative.”
Regarding the opponent, Georgia, Ruiz gave credit: “They lowered the intensity in the second half, while in the first half we were a bit too hasty, wanting to win the game at once, but it didn’t work out.”
Spain will face Germany, who have also been impressive, in the quarter-finals. On this, Ruiz said: “Any opponent is difficult to handle, Germany is a strong team, especially since they’re playing at home. But we believe in our own strength, we want to create new history for the country, it’s going to be hard, but we’ll go all out to win against Germany.”
