This match was also the 5th encounter between Denmark and Germany in major tournaments (World Cup + European Championship), and the first time the two teams met in the knockout stages of a major tournament since the 1992 European Championship final. After both teams had goals disallowed by VAR, Germany broke the deadlock through a penalty from Havertz, and Musiala secured victory for the host nation, sending them to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Denmark’s European Championship journey has come to an end. If Andersen had not been marginally offside, or if Højlund had converted a golden opportunity, the result may have been different. But for now, they can only congratulate Germany on their advancement to the quarter-finals.

Here is a list of Denmark’s record against hosts in European Championships: 1984 European Championship in France, Denmark 0-1 France; 1988 European Championship in Germany, Denmark 0-2 Germany; 1992 European Championship in Sweden, Denmark 0-1 Sweden; 2000 European Championship in Netherlands/Belgium, Denmark 0-3 Netherlands; 2020 European Championship semi-finals, Denmark 1-2 England; 2024 European Championship Round of 16, Denmark 0-2 Germany.
