Southgate: England Need to Raise Their Game in Knockout Stage, I Believe They Can

On June 30, England will face Slovakia in the Round of 16 of the European Championship. In the pre-match press conference, England manager Gareth Southgate admitted that the Three Lions need to perform at a higher level in the knockout stage if they want to go further in the tournament.

England’s performance in the group stage was criticized, and Southgate said that the upcoming knockout matches will be a different story: “There are lessons learned from the group stage, but the knockout stages are a completely different phase.”

Southgate admitted that England need to play better: “We need to raise our game in the next round, and I believe we can. Slovakia are a well-drilled team, and they have some very good players.”

Talking about England’s struggles in the group stage, Southgate said: “The games weren’t as easy as we thought they would be, but all four teams had the ability to get points off each other, which shows the high level of football in Europe. We didn’t show our best level, but we finished top of the group. We need to progress faster than the other teams in the next stage.”
