Wilshere: This Slovakia is stronger than Iceland eight years ago, England must avoid a repeat

England will face Slovakia in a key match of the European Championship Round of 16 at 00:00 on July 1st. Former England international Jack Wilshere wrote about the match in his column for The Sun.

Wilshere wrote: “The last time I faced Slovakia in a major tournament, I was still an England player, and the situation was completely different. Back then, it was the last game of the group stage, and a 0-0 draw was enough for us to qualify. Then we met Iceland in the knockout stage, and you know what happened. This time against Slovakia, there’s a good chance something similar could happen, and I don’t want England to repeat the mistake.”

“For Southgate, the players’ mental state is crucial. England’s struggles in the group stage have understandably caused some outside concerns. That’s just how it is, sometimes you think too much and you end up in the worst position. Southgate needs to avoid that. The team should focus on winning, not thinking about what will happen if they lose.”

“Some players may remember what happened against Iceland, especially Kane, Walker, Stones, who were all there. Actually, after losing to Iceland, we won every knockout match against weaker teams. Everyone knows what to do in the future. Slovakia is certainly stronger than Iceland was in 2016, but England is still the stronger team. I believe they can avoid repeating the mistake of losing to Iceland.”
